In chapter 1, Ralph, Jack, and Simon explore the island by going on an expedition. While they are hiking through the forest, they spot pig-runs, which Jack initially thinks are man-made paths. As the boys begin to ascend the mountain, Ralph suggests that they draw a map. Unfortunately, the boys do not have any paper or utensils with them to draw a map. Simon then suggests that they attempt to draw a map by making scratches on a piece of bark. The boys then realize that drawing a map would be too difficult given the circumstances and continue on their expedition. As the boys ascend higher, they stop to push large boulders off of the side of the mountain before reaching the summit. Once the three boys reach the summit, they discover that they are indeed on a deserted island and travel back to the platform to inform the group of their discoveries.
