What is Ta-Nehesi's opinion about the American Dream?

Coates writes about the American Dream in his memoir, Between the World and Me, in which he writes to his son, Samori, about how the dream often works against black people, taking the form of certain abuses, such as police brutality. In We Were Eight Years in Power, he examines, for instance, how the election of Trump was a direct rebuke of the Obama presidency and a reassertion of white supremacy.
Coates believes that the American Dream has historically relied on the subjugation of black people. The ability of white Americans to obtain property, job opportunities, and social prestige rested, according to Coates, on the exclusion of black people.
Coates has also critiqued the notion of American exceptionalism which, he believes, has prevented the nation from thorough self-examination. If we are special, or "anointed," to use Coates's words, we believe that we are above reproach or criticism. This attitude makes us less likely to examine how our values have been impacted by racism.
