What were Japan's successes in Asia and the Pacific in World War II?

Japan had several successes in the Pacific region and in Asia before and during World War II. Before the war began, Japan invaded Manchuria, a region in northeast China. Manchuria was rich in resources that Japan needed. Japan also controlled other parts of China, forcing the Chinese to move their capital from Beijing to Chongqing.
Japan also controlled many places in the Pacific Ocean. Japan inflicted much damage to the United States military with its attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After this attack, Japan took over many places including Guam, Wake Island, part of the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies, Singapore, Malaya, and Burma. The American military was too severely damaged to stop these attacks from occurring through June of 1942. Most of the western and the central Pacific regions were under Japanese control by June 1942. Japan also controlled parts of Asia.
Eventually, the tide turned against the Japanese in the Pacific Ocean. When the Japanese failed to capture Midway Island in June 1942, they suffered significant damage to their military. After the Japanese were defeated at the Battle of Guadalcanal in late 1942 and in early 1943, the Japanese would be retreating for the rest of the war. These battles at Midway Island and at Guadalcanal put Japan on the defensive until World War II ended.
